B-36 PEACEMAKER

The Peacemaker

The designation of "Peacemaker" was very appropriate for the B-36.  Its nuclear delivery capability kept the peace for well over a decade.   The reputation it achieved for never having fired a shot in anger is well deserved.

This does not mean that it never fired a shot.  The following links to the WebSite of the Federation of American Scientists will serve to show that the B-36 actually dropped many nuclear bombs during its tenure with the Air Force.   Nuclear device testing not only tests atomic bombs, it also tests delivery systems.   The B-36 consistently proved its ability to accurately deliver nukes to their targets.   The Gallery of U.S. Nuclear Tests provides a listing and links to a pictorial history of all of the nuclear test programs.  You will see there that the B-36 was a busy machine during those tests.

One of the photographs from Operation Teapot is especially interesting.  It shows a high altitude airburst of an atomic device that was dropped from a B-36H at nearly 37 thousand feet.  The eight contrails from the aircraft are clearly visible in this photo, and the helical patterns of the contrails from the 6 recips are quite evident.  Click here to see Teapot HA in a new browser window.  When you are through viewing the picture, close the new window to return here.

If you find the site interesting, you may wish to visit their homepage for additional information regarding the development of nuclear weapons around the world.
